And here we go again: new month, new whisky wishlist! There’s been quite a lot of exciting new releases this past month, especially on the ever-growing Irish Whiskey category and from what I know, the lucky Irishmen aren’t willing to see this trend stop anytime soon… Expect some exciting things those next few months from the Emerald Isle! Anyway, let’s stop teasing and have a look at this March malted selection…
Diageo recently launched a new premium Blended Irish Whiskey: Roe & Co. The move by Diageo into the premium Irish Whiskey category comes as the company announced plans for investment in a whiskey distillery in the once Power Station at St. James’s Gate.
Roe & Co is named in honour of George Roe, the once world-famous whiskey maker who helped build the golden era of Irish Whiskey in the 19th century. His distillery, George Roe and Co extended over 17 acres on Thomas Street in Dublin and was once Ireland’s largest distillery.
Using her 30 years of experience, Diageo’s Master Blender Caroline Martin and her team set about meticulously sourcing and selecting stocks of the very finest Irish whiskies. Having trialed over 100 prototype blends since December 2014, Caroline has created an extraordinary expression of Irish Whiskey. The high proportion of first-fill casks gives notes of creamy vanilla balanced with its hints of fruit and soft spice and a remarkable depth for such an elegant and refined whiskey. Roe & Co is non-chill filtered and bottled at 45% ABV. The first blend of Roe & Co will be available in key European cities from 1st March 2017 as part of Diageo’s growing Reserve portfolio.
A new Swedish single malt whisky from the High Coast distillery – their Explorer expression was mostly matured in bourbon casks, but was treated to a finishing period in Swedish oak casks!
The fifth release of Bruichalddich’s Black Art was made by head distiller Adam Hannett from a recipe passed down from his predecessor Jim McEwan. Distilled in 1992 and aged for 24 years, this is an elegant whisky with notes of pineapple, melon, strawberry and may other fruits, honey, tobacco and vanilla.
nother addition to the Glenmorangie Private Edition range! Released in early 2017, Bacalta is the first expression from the distillery which has been finished in sun-baked Malmsey Madeira casks. Dr. Bill Lumsden had bespoke American oak casks made and heavily toasted, then seasoned with Malmsey wine and left to bake in the heat of Madeira’s sun. The casks were emptied and shipped to Scotland to finish the Glenmorangie whisky, which had been matured in ex-bourbon barrels.
Sonoma County – Cherrywood Rye
From the Sonoma County Distilling Co. their Cherrywood Rye! They use a combination of 80% unmalted rye, 10% unmalted wheat and 10% barley which has been cherrywood smoked – very intriguing stuff.
1972 vintage Glengoyne, eh? Sounds delightful! Yes indeed, this is a rare bottle of 1972 vintage single malt Scotch whisky from the Glengoyne distillery in the Highlands, which was matured for over 25 years. It was drawn from 7 casks, resulting in 2,400 bottles presented at 57.8% ABV.
