St Patrick’s Day being just around the corner and the whole Irish Whiskey category hitting the headlines lately (figures are more than impressive, did you know that the Irish Whiskey Association expects global market share to grow by 300% by 2030 from 4% to 12%?) are just two of the reasons that made me finally come up with this long-overdue piece on my favourite under-£50 Irish whiskeys. And yes, my goal for the coming weeks is to have them all reviewed around here… (but hey don’t take this as a promise though, we’re not married! 😉 )
This historic single pot still Irish whiskey used only to be available in Dublin grocer Mitchell’s, but now has spread across the world to huge acclaim. A delightful combination of fruit, toffee and malt.
A delightful single pot still Irish whiskey, Redbreast 12 is highly praised by experts. Named ‘Overall Irish Whiskey of the Year’ at the 2013 Irish Whiskey Awards, we can’t get enough of it.

Teeling Single Grain
Irish single grain whiskey from Teeling! There are only an elite few Irish single grain whiskies out there at the moment, but Teeling went ahead and made theirs unique by maturing it in Californian Cabernet Sauvignon casks. Deliciously sweet with a good deal of spice and fruit hide within the Teeling Single Grain. (pssst! see my review here!)
Writers Tears – Pot Still blend
Writers Tears is a light, sweet Irish whiskey made using a mix of single pot still and single malt whiskies, resulting in oodles of honey’d, fruity notes. Wonderfully easy to drink, it would make for a great introduction to Irish whiskey for folks new to the spirit. No writers were harmed in the making of this whiskey.
Glendalough Double Barrel
Glendalough Double Barrel Irish Whiskey is a single grain Irish whiskey, initially matured in American bourbon barrels before enjoying a finishing period of six months in Spanish Oloroso Sherry casks. This comes bottled at 42% ABV, brought down to this strength by Wicklow mountain water. A rather tasty release presented by Glendalough, rich in vanilla, caramel, Christmas spices and dried fruit notes.
