Phinney’s brand Savage & Cooke focuses on producing whiskies, with The Burning Chair being their signature bourbon. This unique product is made from a blend of bourbons distilled in Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Each batch is aged for a minimum of 4 years in new, American oak barrels before being finished in cabernet barrels from Napa Valley.
The Burning Chair Bourbon is priced around $50-$70, which makes it a fairly accessible option for those interested in exploring this flavorful spirit. Often praised for its distinctive Napa Valley touch, the whiskey offers excellent value for the price.
When I first took a whiff of the Burning Chair Bourbon, I was greeted by a delightful blend of sweet and fruity aromas. The nose starts with big, sweet red fruits with a hint of fresh-cut pink flowers. There’s an intense and aromatically intriguing red wine influence, along with notes of apple, raspberry jam, and praline.
As I tasted the bourbon, I was taken on an enjoyable journey through a medley of flavors. The palate unveiled a delightful mix of caramel and toasted oak, along with hints of vanilla bean, brown sugar, and delicious baked apples. The whiskey’s sweetness is well-balanced by the spiciness and warmth from its rye element, and I could also pick up soft notes of butterscotch, tobacco, and milk chocolate.
The finish of the Burning Chair Bourbon is smooth and satisfying.
