New month means new whisky wishlist around here! And as I’m pursuing my journey into the universe of World Whisky those days, I thought I would highlight a few of those here as well, because great malts are made on all continents, and you’ll be missing out on some incredible drams if you stick to your habits (no Scotch, this isn’t cheating!).
Starward 10th Anniversary Single Malt
“A very special bottling from Australia’s Starward to mark their 10th anniversary. This edition was created from a mix of the eight cask types that had been used across the company’s history, with a focus on Australian wine and fortified wine casks. The result is a rich, sweet dram with notes of dried fruits, burnt brown sugar and oak spice.”
Black Mapple Hill Small Batch Bourbon
“A special small-batch bottling of Oregon Straight bourbon from Black Maple Hill, aged for an average of eight years. Bottled at a good drinking strength of 47.5% abv.”
New Zaeland South Island 25 years old
“A 35cl bottle of 25-year-old whisky from the closed Willowbank distillery, which was operated in Dunedin on New Zealand’s South Island until 1997. Notes of sweet malt and golden fruits are interspersed with gentle smoke and a light peat influence in this dram, which has spent its entire life in ex-bourbon barrels.
The Willowbank distillery was the last operational distillery in New Zealand and was closed by its then owners Fosters in 1997. Its stills were subsequently sent to Fiji for making rum.”
Dingle Single Pot Still Whiskey
“The Dingle distillery have been very busy indeed – not only have they released their own single malt Irish whiskey(much to the excitement of everyone looking forward to the results of the Irish whiskey revival), but they’ve created their own single pot still whiskey too! Their take on this classic Irish style of whiskey has been matured in casks that previously held Pedro Ximénez – the sweetness from the Sherry works very well with the creamy spirit.”
“An indie bottling of 15 year old Bruichladdich single malt, drawn from a Radoux French oak cask. It was distilled by the Islay-based distillers in July 2002 and bottled in September 2017 by North Star Spirits with an outturn of 264 bottles.”
