I think Winter is the perfect season to enjoy richer Port wine finished whiskies, so here’s a small selection of my personal favourites if you’re also in the mood for some heart-warming amber nectars (for every budget!) 😀
GlenDronach Peated Port Wood Finish
“Following up its first peated single malt Scotch, GlenDronach Peated Whisky, GlenDronach have now created this delightful peated malt, which was finished in Douro Valley port pipes.
Bottled without an age statement at 46% ABV, the GlenDronach Peated Port Finish is made in reference to the nineteenth century tradition of importing casked port into Scotland.”
“Quinta Ruban is Glenmorangie’s port finish. To craft this single malt they specially selected Port pipes from the Douro valley in Portugal.”
“The flagship single malt from Balvenie’s little group of Port Wood whiskies. This bottling was finished in thirty year old port pipes and is a veritable masterclass in poise and balance.”
“The Tomatin 14 Year Old was introduced to the core range in 2014. It features Highland single malt matured in bourbon barrels as well as specially selected Port casks, imparting wine-like sweetness to the whisky.”
“Single malt Taiwanese whisky from the King Car Distillery, released as part of their Kavalan Solist range. It was matured in a cask which previously held tasty Port, imparting in-your-face fruitiness.”
Cragganmore 2003 – Distillers Edition – Port Wood Finish
“The Cragganmore Distillers Editions spend a finishing period in casks that previously held Port wine, adding extra fruitiness to the whisky. The 2015 release was distilled in 2003.”
Dad’s Hat Rye – Port Wine Cask Finish
“From the Dad’s Hat range of ryes produced in Pennsylvania comes a port wine finished expression. It’s made with the same mashbill of their classic rye (80% rye, 15% malted barley and 5% malted rye), initially aged in charred new oak quarter casks for at least six months before being transferred over to casks which previously held port wine for a further three months. This finishing period adds a depth of fruity richness to the spicy rye.”
Old Hobart Overeem Port Matured
“Matured in a single Port cask that has been cut down into a quarter cask (100 litre), this intense Tasmanian single malt is full of dark juicy fruit and spice character and bottled at cask strength.”
