I can’t believe we’re already entering July (Hmm… Feels like I keep telling you that time is flying each month when I realise it’s already time for the next monthly selection) and I still don’t know where I’ll be in August (Not like I’m some sort of control freak trying to plan everything in advance… Noooo.). Crazy times ahead! And July also means Birthday month for me 😀 I’ll be turning 26 (Mind you, I still got 4 years to actually say how old I am turning on my birthday before entering the birthday-jokers gang pretending they’re 25 years old every year… Hey dad, that one is for you!) in 9 days and I’m more than desperate to spend all my birthday money on anti-aging cream excited to find out which drams my relatives will be offering me on this special day (Look at me trying to send an implicit message…).
As they probably need some inspiration, here’s my July whisky wishlist!
Something a little different from Tomatin’s Cù Bòcan range here. These smoky whiskies, which are named after a spectral dog that haunts the Highlands where the distillery can be found, have been released since 2013. Rather than using lightly peated spirit, which Tomatin now produces for a week each year, this 1988 vintage whisky has ben matured in casks that previously held highly peated Islay single malt. 2,200 bottles have been released.
A 42 year old single malt Scotch whisky from Tobermory! An extraordinarily well-aged whisky from the distillery on the Isle of Mull, which even contains some of the first spirit produced when the distillery was reopened in 1972! A release of only 650 bottles.
This beutifully presented expression was released to celebrate the opening of Teeling’s distillery in the Irish capital, the first to open in 125 years. Distilled in 1999 it’s been exclusively aged in rum casks for the entire maturation and bottled without chill filtration at 46% abv. 10,000 bottles have been produced to mark this significant milestone.
The Chita

A 2012 bottling of Talisker’s 30 year old, massively satisfying single malt from the distillery on the Isle of Skye. Also, the box is jazzier than previous 30 year old releases! Nice! 3,186 bottles were produced.
Paul John 6 Year Old – Batch 2 (That Boutique-y Whisky Company)
It will come as no surprise that the temperature and humidity experienced by casks of maturing whisky are rather different in India than in Scotland! The alcohol lost to evaporation is known as the angels’ share and is much, much greater in India (making lengthy maturations impracticable, although greater interaction can take place in a shorter time). This Boutique-y label shows some of those thirsty angels queuing up for their share of this Paul John! Batch 2 not only features an age statement, but also some more familiar faces alongside the Chairman Paul John himself, who featured on Batch 1. This time Master Distiller Michael John D’Souza is included too, alongside the company’s President of Sales and Marketing, and Head of Exports.
