<\/a><\/p>\n BUILT FROM SCRATCH\/ Isle of Harris <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Dubbed The Social Distillery, it is the first commercial distillery to be built of the Isle of Harris and is only the second distillery in the Outer Hebrides. The result of a seven-year project, the Tarbet-based site\u00a0will provide\u00a020 local jobs.<\/p>\n \u201cIt is on this special island that conditions prevail for the production and maturation of a unique and exceedingly fine malt whisky\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n \u201cAs if that was not enough, we have every expectation that it should inspire creative initiatives \u2013 entrepreneurial, cultural and social \u2013 for the benefit of the island\u2019s future, helping to retain those here and attract back those who left.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Annually, The Isle of Harris Distillery will produce 300,000 bottles of its single malt Scotch whisky, called The Hearach, which is the\u00a0Gaelic name for an inhabitant of Harris.<\/p>\n The first batch of The Hearach is expected to be released in four years\u2019 time and will be limited to 1,916 bottles \u2013 the same as the number of Harris residents. Those who pre-order the first batch will receive a lifetime of free distillery tours and their name inscribed on a wall of wooden staves in the distillery warehouse.<\/p>\n The distillery claims that cool, humid and temperate weather of the island will have a \u201cunique effect\u201d on its whisky, which will feature \u201cmore complex\u201d flavours from the wood of the barrels.<\/p>\n A limited number of casks from the first year\u2019s production have been made available for sale, but\u00a0the first year\u2019s allocation has already sold out.<\/p>\n The company will also produce a gin made using sugar kelp harvested from the seas surrounding the island, which will be exclusively available from the distillery. (more details on the Spirits Business)<\/a><\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n REOPENING\/ Bladnoch Distillery<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Bladnoch Distillery, which has lay dormant for six years, has been acquired by businessman David Prior, who has pledged \u201csubstantial investment\u201d to restart whisky production.<\/p>\n Gavin Hewitt, former chief executive of the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA), will support Prior as non-executive director.<\/p>\n Funds will enable the distillery\u2019s production facilities to \u201cmeet environmental standards\u201d, while its eight existing warehouse, administrative and visitors\u2019 centre staff will be retained and new jobs will be created.<\/p>\n \u201cI am delighted to have been able to purchase a Scotch whisky distillery of such renown as Bladnoch,\u201d said Prior. \u201cScotch Whisky is the world\u2019s foremost spirit drink and I am proud to be part of the Scotch whisky industry.\u201d<\/p>\n Bladnoch Distillery was first established in 1817 and is situated on the banks of the River Bladnoch.
