To inaugurate this new blog column called “Distillery of the week”, what would have been better than introducing you to a brand new distillery : Kingsbarns Distillery.

The Kingdom of Fife and especially the little charming town of St Andrews standing at the top of my favourite places in Scotland, I was more than delighted when I heard Kingsbarns Distillery was to open its doors last month.

There’s still years to wait before tasting its production but its visitor centre is currently in operation and offers genuine experiences.

“The Wemyss family bought the Kingsbarns Distillery project in January 2013 and construction at the site began at Easter that year. Approximately six miles from St. Andrews, the distillery and its visitor centre are being built close to the world famous Kingsbarns championship golf course on the Cambo Estate. The site of the actual distillery is the historic and charming East Newhall Farm steading.

The new Kingsbarns Single Malt Scotch whisky will be classified in the Lowlands region and available after a minimum of three years maturation in oak casks. Fife grown malted barley has been secured to make the spirit and it will be matured predominantly in ex-Bourbon casks.”

Set within a unique environment, only a few miles from the historical town of St Andrews and its beautiful castle, world-famous university and welknown golf courses, Kingsbarns Distillery features a horse mill and doocot, unusual facilities which are really worth the visit.

Kingsbarns Distillery is the only whisky distillery in the St Andrews area and is therefore a new attraction for tourists coming over to the area, which remained mainly a golf destination. Bringing whisky aficionados to the area will obviously boost Fife’s tourism activity.

As a new actor in the industry, producing Lowlands whisky, Kingsbarns Distillery offers its visitors the unique opportunity to watch the process first hand and to be somehow part of the history. Visiting newly-opened distilleries sometimes prove to be very refreshing in the world of whisky, where everything is always about being the “oldest”. In my opinion, Kingsbarns Distillery is really bringing a breath of fresh air to the Scottish whisky industry, for the best.

Icing on the whisky cake, at the end of your tour, you can relax sipping your favourite hot or cold drink with a scone at the Distillery coffee and next summer, you’ll even be able to test your golfing skills on the green ! Pairing golf and whisky : the true Scottish experience, isn’t it ?
