Reviewing Knappogue Castle 16 Twin Wood

thewhiskylady - 2017-06-27

Finally! After having a closer look at both the 12-year-old & 14-year-old expressions from Knappogue Castle Whiskey, I’m now putting the older brother on the tasting table!

Twin Wood is a 16 year old single malt from the Knappague Castle range, which was initially matured in bourbon barrels before being transferred over to casks seasoned with Oloroso Sherry for a finishing period and bottled at 40% ABV.

Nose: sweet and perfumy with pastries, almond-chocolate croissant, cinnamon rolls, baked apples, pear drop and more delicate floral hints of jasmin, primavera and rose. Also some strong nutty hints and something slightly meaty/organic… honey-glazed bacon slices anyone? 😀

Palate: Malty, finely balanced, gentle on the palate yet quite rich with a pleasant velvety/roundish texture. The sherry influence really shows on the palate, boasting notes of caramel popcorns, porridge, honey cereals, chocolate podder, baked orchard fruits, sweet spices, dried fruits, christmas pudding and raisin buns (I know, there’s a whole bakery in there!).

Finish: Lingering with oak spices and roasted nuts.
